Capt. Steve
I started making shields in March of 2005 when I thought I would make one for my helmet. With a blank shield from another manufacturer, I stamped and painted my first creation. It didn’t work…shields made of three pieces sewn together are not made of tooling leather, so I learned. After a trip to Tandy Leather in Sacramento I had enough tooling leather (and an assortment of tools) to make about 25 shields. Yep, I could have bought a hand painted shield, instead I spent about 10 times as much for tools and more leather than I knew what to do with. Now I spend my four days cutting, tooling, and painting.
When I’m not making shields I am a fire captain in the San Francisco bay area city of Newark. (Located between Oakland and San Jose.) August of 2008 marks my 21st year with Newark.
My three teenage sons help with inventory, email, shipping, and sometimes painting. The two older ones want to be firemen also. So your purchase will help with their college fund.
We also make leather suspenders but we don’t advertise that because we’re busy making shields. If you want suspenders they are $65 and come in natural color or black.
Please click on the “Gallery” to see some of the shields we’ve made. We will send full color brochure with recent shields if you send your address.
Thanks for looking. Captain Steve
